APES, HELP, CONTAGION, etc.

I’ve fallen down on the writing thing lately, because I’ve been emotionally distracted, as my readers know, and I thank you for your prayers and kind words.

However, I have seen all the movies, so I’ll give short comments here, just to keep up my end of the deal:

THE RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, starring the beautiful James Franco, is simply wonderful. I loved it thoroughly and have seen it four or fives times now. I’m very excited about the inevitable sequel, especially because the evil-looking rival ape’s name is Koba, and as a history buff, I know that Koba was also Stalin’s nickname. Caesar v. Koba is going to be epic. Can’t wait.

THE HELP, starring Viola Davis. The book was amazing, the movie just as great. I need to see it again, because during the soiree, a lady fell down the theater steps and Brian had to put on his RN hat and tend to her while EMS was called, so we sort of missed one of the best parts of the movie. I’m not going to go again to the theater, because this is definitely a DVD to purchase the moment it comes out.

CONTAGION rates an entire post, and maybe I’ll get to it. I didn’t like it the first time, but that might be because I went to the first showing at midnight (my kid’s birthday was the next day, and I knew I wouldn’t be free to go), so was desperately tired. In fact, I was so tired, I missed whole major motivations and mistook what Mr. Law’s character was about. Saw it again with Brian and really, really liked it. Gwyneth Paltrow does a seizure to die for. Matt Damon is his perfect self. Jennifer Ehle is understatedly glorious, much better than her sweet, but unattractive part in King’s Speech. Laurence Fishbourne is wonderful. Kate Winslet completely rocks. Marion Cotillard–always wonderful, but here a real hero, as is everyone in the whole story. A couple of little glitchy things, but all in all really amazing. Loved this movie.

Okay, what else? I wanted to see THE DEBT again because although I didn’t like it at all, my sister loved it, so I wanted to give it a nother try. Haven’t yet, but still might.

I think there are others. If I remember, I’ll add them on here.

  1. Courageous is an excellent film. The theater was fairly packed on Sunday at 1pm. The film is very satisfying. This Georgia based studio is growing into something impressive. Courageous is their best effort so far: Facing Giants and Fireproof were both good, Courageous is better.

I’ll gladly admit to finding my tears flowing in more than a couple of places. This alone may explain why Rotten Tomatoes “Audience” score is a very impressive 93 – certified fresh. The overtly Christian dialogue and subject matter explains the RT “Critics” consensus score of 29 – a “rotten” score.

I encourage Christians to see this film in-theater…support this worthy addition to a growing body of respectable Christian films widely released thrpugt these US of America.
